99 day(s) to end
Joey is now 14 years old and truly a teenager.
Joey is diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, spastic quadripalegia, and a seizure disorder. He needs a tracheostomy because he can’t handle his own oral secretions, has no gag reflex and can’t swallow. He also needs a feeding tube for all of his nutritional needs. He is under the care of many specialists, including gastroenterologist, pulmonologist, orthopedic, ENT, neurologist and physiatrist.
Joey is non-verbal, which doesn’t mean he can’t communicate. In fact he communicates quite well. He uses a communication device but he is also very good at using facial expressions (or he will ignore you completely if is mad).
We have been very fortunate that Joey has not needed to be hospitalized for over five years. He has had gastro issues, vomiting and losing weight. Due to changes in what he is fed and additional medications he has slowly but steadily put on weight. He still deals with vomiting issues but it is much better than it had been.
Joey attended his first prom this year. He had a BLAST! He spent most of the time on the dance floor with his friends (using his gait trainer so he could get out and boogy).
Joey’s favorite past time is watching his favorite character on TV.
